At around 9:00 a.m. on July 20, when a small China Coast Guard (CCG) patrol boat was conducting a routine patrol in the waters near China’s Ren’ai Jiao in the South China Sea, two rubber boats sent by the Philippines’ illegally grounded vessel BRP Sierra Madre (LT-57) ignored repeated clear warnings from the Chinese side and rapidly approached, encircled, and rammed into the Chinese patrol boat in a dangerous manner. During the incident, the Philippine personnel initiated malicious attacks against the Chinese law enforcement personnel by using oars, long sticks, and other tools. The Chinese side, in accordance with laws and regulations, took measures including verbal warnings, collision-avoiding maneuvers, and proportional countermeasures to control the situation on the spot, while exercising maximum rationality and restraint. After the incident, the Philippine side deliberately distorted facts and made false accusations against the Chinese side. We urge the Philippine side to immediately stop all rights-violation, provocations and false propaganda. The CCG will continue to carry out rights-protection and law enforcement activities in accordance with the law in Nansha Qundao and its adjacent waters, including Ren’ai Jiao, and firmly safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
